Delighting in, willing, desiring — verbal adjective describing one who takes pleasure in or is inclined toward
The adjective חָפֵץ (chaphets) describes someone who delights in, desires, or is willing — a person whose inner disposition inclines them toward something. It appears in both positive and negative frames. David tells Solomon that God seeks a heart that is 'willing' (חָפֵץ) to seek him (1 Chr 28:9). The psalmist asks, 'Who is the one delighting in life?' (Ps 34:13 [Eng. 34:12]) and declares that God takes no delight in wickedness (Ps 5:5 [Eng. 5:4]). Psalm 35:27 speaks of those who 'delight in' the vindication of the righteous. The word also covers simple willingness: Jeroboam consecrated 'whoever was willing' as priests (1 Kgs 13:33), and Naboth's vineyard is offered 'if you are willing' (1 Kgs 21:6). Spanish 'que se deleita/quiere' and English 'delighting/willing' both serve.
