Conj-w | V-Nifal-ConjPerf-2mp  |  5× in 1 sense
to withdraw, hide oneself; to take shelter or conceal oneself from danger or judgment
A verb meaning to withdraw or hide oneself, closely related to the more common ḥābāʾ. In Joshua 2:16, Rahab instructs the Israelite spies to hide in the hills for three days. Isaiah 26:20 issues a tender imperative — 'Come, my people, withdraw into your chambers' — evoking divine shelter during coming judgment. The Niphal forms in 1 Kings 22:25 and 2 Kings 7:12 describe hiding in an inner room, while Jeremiah 49:10 declares that Esau cannot hide from God's searching judgment.

Senses
1. sense 1 To withdraw into concealment or hide oneself, whether for safety or to escape danger. The Qal imperative in Isaiah 26:20 tenderly urges God's people to take shelter during divine wrath. Niphal forms describe physical hiding: the spies in the hills (Josh 2:16), a prophet fleeing to an inner room (1 Kgs 22:25), Syrian soldiers concealing themselves (2 Kgs 7:12). Jeremiah 49:10 uses it theologically: Esau is stripped bare and cannot hide. Spanish 'esconderse' and French 'cacher' uniformly convey concealment.
