Prep-b | V-Hifil-Inf | 3ms  |  4× in 1 sense
To shine, flash forth light; used of celestial bodies and God's favor illuminating a person.
This rare verb (halal I, distinct from the common halal II 'to praise') describes the shining or flashing forth of light. Job recalls the days when God's lamp 'shone' upon his head (Job 29:3), a vivid image of divine favor. In the Hiphil, it describes the radiance of heavenly bodies — the sun flashing forth (Job 31:26), the sneezing of Leviathan casting light (Job 41:18), and the stars that will cease to give their light in judgment (Isa 13:10). Spanish 'brilló' and 'darán' capture both the past glow and the prophetic darkness.

Senses
1. sense 1 To shine or flash forth light, said of luminaries and divine favor. In the Qal (Job 29:3), it pictures God's lamp shining on Job's head as a figure of blessing. In the Hiphil, it describes the radiance of sun, stars, and even Leviathan's sneezing (Job 31:26; 41:18; Isa 13:10). The cognate Akkadian 'elelu' (be bright) and Arabic 'halla' (begin to shine, of the new moon) confirm the root meaning. French and German translations left some forms untranslated, reflecting the word's rarity.
