Shout, shouting, cheer; the loud cry of grape-treaders at harvest or the battle cry of an enemy.
A noun for a loud communal shout, originally the joyous cry raised by those treading grapes at harvest time. Isaiah 16:9-10 and Jeremiah 48:33 mourn the silencing of this vintage shout as a sign of devastation. Yet the same word also denotes the menacing war cry of an approaching enemy. Jeremiah 48:33 plays on this double meaning brilliantly: 'the shouting is no harvest-shouting'--the familiar sound of celebration has been replaced by the terrifying roar of invaders. In Jeremiah 25:30, Yahweh himself utters a hedad like that of grape-treaders against all the earth. German 'Jauchzen' and Spanish 'grito de jubilo' capture the exuberant quality of the harvest shout.
