To gleam, brighten up, smile; to cause a flash of destruction upon the strong.
A rare verb found only in the Hiphil, carrying both the warmth of a brightened face and the violence of a sudden flash of ruin. In Job 9:27 and 10:20, Job resolves to set aside his complaint and 'brighten up' or 'show a smile,' an act of forced cheer in the face of suffering. Psalm 39:13 uses the same idiom as a plea: 'Look away from me, that I may smile again.' But Amos 5:9 turns the word ominous — God 'flashes destruction upon the stronghold,' the same gleam now wielded as judgment. The Arabic cognate بَلِجَ ('to gleam, be radiant') confirms the root image of sudden brightness.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To show a gleam or smile, to look cheerful. Used in Job 9:27, 10:20, and Psalm 39:13, where the sufferer longs to 'brighten up' before death. Spanish 'me-alegraré' and German 'lass-mich-smile' both reflect this sense of forced or fleeting cheerfulness. In Amos 5:9, the same root takes a darker turn — God causes ruin to 'flash' or 'burst forth' upon the strong (המבליג שׁד על־עז), turning the image of radiant brightness into one of devastating judgment. French splits the nuance neatly: 'briller' for cheerfulness, 'briser' for destructive flashing. 4×
