Verbo raro que solo aparece en Hifil, portando tanto la calidez de un rostro iluminado como la violencia de un destello repentino de ruina. En Job 9:27 y 10:20, Job resuelve dejar de lado su queja y 'alegrarse' o 'mostrar una sonrisa,' un acto de ánimo forzado ante el sufrimiento. El Salmo 39:13 emplea el mismo giro como súplica: 'Aparta de mí tu mirada, para que pueda sonreír de nuevo.' Pero Amós 5:9 torna la palabra ominosa: Dios 'hace brillar la destrucción sobre la fortaleza,' convirtiendo ese mismo resplandor en instrumento de juicio.
