Plunder, spoil, booty; goods seized by force in warfare or raiding, also used of persons treated as prey
Baz (בַּז) denotes plunder or spoil — property and possessions seized by force, especially in the context of warfare. It often appears in the phrase hayah le-vaz ('become plunder'), applied both to material goods and to vulnerable people treated as prey (Num 14:3, 31; Deut 1:39). The prophets use it powerfully: Isaiah 10:6 pairs it with shalal ('spoil') in God's commission of Assyria, while Ezekiel applies it to the despoiling of the Temple (Ezek 7:21) and the plundering of nations (Ezek 29:19; 38:12–13). The word carries a raw, violent edge — it names the brutal economic reality of ancient conquest.
Senses
1. plunder, spoil, prey — Goods, possessions, or persons seized by force, particularly in military conquest or raiding. Frequently paired with shalal ('spoil') as a near-synonym in prophetic texts (Isa 10:6; Ezek 38:12–13). The idiom hayah le-vaz ('to become plunder') appears in Num 14:3 and Jer 49:32, applied to both livestock and people. Spanish 'despojo/botín,' French 'butin/proie,' and German 'Beute' all convey the sense of forcible seizure. Ezekiel 7:21 applies it to the Temple itself being handed over to foreign plunderers. 25×
