Plunder, spoil, booty; goods seized by force in warfare or raiding, also used of persons treated as prey
Baz (בַּז) denotes plunder or spoil — property and possessions seized by force, especially in the context of warfare. It often appears in the phrase hayah le-vaz ('become plunder'), applied both to material goods and to vulnerable people treated as prey (Num 14:3, 31; Deut 1:39). The prophets use it powerfully: Isaiah 10:6 pairs it with shalal ('spoil') in God's commission of Assyria, while Ezekiel applies it to the despoiling of the Temple (Ezek 7:21) and the plundering of nations (Ezek 29:19; 38:12–13). The word carries a raw, violent edge — it names the brutal economic reality of ancient conquest.

Senses
1. plunder, spoil, prey Goods, possessions, or persons seized by force, particularly in military conquest or raiding. Frequently paired with shalal ('spoil') as a near-synonym in prophetic texts (Isa 10:6; Ezek 38:12–13). The idiom hayah le-vaz ('to become plunder') appears in Num 14:3 and Jer 49:32, applied to both livestock and people. Spanish 'despojo/botín,' French 'butin/proie,' and German 'Beute' all convey the sense of forcible seizure. Ezekiel 7:21 applies it to the Temple itself being handed over to foreign plunderers. 25×
