To go straight, advance; pronounce blessed/happy; lead or guide; set right. Pual: be called blessed or be guided.
A rich verb whose senses radiate from the idea of going straight or forward. Its best-known use is pronouncing someone blessed — as when Leah exclaims 'Happy am I! For women will call me blessed' (Gen 30:13), using the same root that gives us the word 'ashre' (blessed). In the Piel it also means to lead or guide along the right path (Isa 3:12), and in a moral register to set right or correct the oppressed (Isa 1:17). The Spanish glosses beautifully distinguish these: 'bienaventurados' for blessing, 'guian' for leading, and 'corregid' for setting right.
5. set right or reprove — To set right, correct, or reprove — a moral-judicial application of going straight. Isaiah 1:17 commands 'set right the oppressor' (or 'relieve the oppressed'), using the verb to mean restoring justice. The Spanish 'corregid' (correct!) captures the imperative moral force. This sense bridges the physical 'make straight' and the social 'make things right.' 1×

Senses
1. pronounce blessed or happy — To pronounce someone blessed, happy, or fortunate — the most frequent sense. When Leah names her son Asher saying 'women will call me blessed' (Gen 30:13), she uses this Piel form. It appears in wisdom and praise contexts: the virtuous woman's children 'call her blessed' (Prov 31:28), and the nations bless the righteous king (Ps 72:17). The Spanish 'llamamos bienaventurados' and French 'dire heureux' both capture the declarative, congratulatory force — publicly acknowledging someone's happy state. 7×

2. lead or guide — To lead, guide, or direct someone along a course. Isaiah 3:12 warns that the people's leaders 'lead them astray,' and Isaiah 9:16 condemns guides who mislead. Proverbs 23:19 urges 'direct your heart in the way.' The semantic link to sense 1 is the idea of setting someone on the straight path — whether literally guiding or metaphorically blessing. Spanish 'los que guian' and 'dirige' reflect this navigational meaning clearly. 3×

3. be called blessed — The Pual passive of pronouncing blessed: to be called blessed, to be declared happy by others. Psalm 41:2 promises that the one who considers the poor 'shall be called blessed in the land,' and Proverbs 3:18 says wisdom's holders are blessed. The passive transforms the active declaration into a state received. Spanish 'sera bienaventurado' and French 'heureux' render this well. 3×

4. walk straight or advance — To walk straight, advance, or proceed forward — the root physical meaning from which the other senses develop. Proverbs 4:14 warns 'do not advance in the way of the wicked,' and Proverbs 9:6 invites 'walk in the way of understanding.' The Assyrian cognate asharu (to go straight) confirms this as the base meaning. Spanish 'avances' and 'caminad' preserve the directional, locomotion sense. 2×

6. be led or guided — The Pual passive of leading or guiding: to be led or directed by another. Isaiah 9:16 speaks of those 'guided by them' who are led astray — the passive counterpart to sense 2. Spanish 'los guiados por ellos' makes the passive agency explicit. This is the only clear passive-of-guidance occurrence, distinct from passive-of-blessing in sense 3. 1×
