V-Qal-Perf-2ms  |  5× in 1 sense
To set aside, reserve, withdraw, or withhold — used of reserving blessings, setting apart spirit, and withholding pleasure.
A verb with a range spanning from 'reserve' to 'withdraw' to 'withhold,' appearing in diverse narrative contexts. In Genesis 27:36 Esau pleads with Isaac asking whether he has not reserved a blessing for him. Numbers 11:17 and 11:25 describe God taking some of the spirit resting on Moses and setting it apart for the seventy elders. In Ecclesiastes 2:10 the Preacher says he withheld nothing from his eyes. Ezekiel 42:6 uses the Niphal for architectural narrowing. Spanish 'guardaste' ('you kept') and German 'aufbewahrt' ('preserved') both highlight the core idea of setting something aside.

Senses
1. sense 1 To set aside, reserve, withdraw, or withhold something from a larger portion. The semantic thread is separation of a part from a whole: Isaac reserving a blessing (Gen 27:36), God withdrawing some of Moses's spirit to redistribute it to the elders (Num 11:17, 25), and Qoheleth refusing to withhold any pleasure from himself (Eccl 2:10). The Niphal in Ezekiel 42:6 extends the idea architecturally — the upper chambers were 'narrowed,' i.e., withdrawn inward. Spanish 'guardaste' and German 'aufbewahrt' both capture the 'reserve/keep back' nuance, while English 'withheld' and 'took' reflect the broader range from retention to redistribution.
