bonds, prison (literal bonds or the place of binding)
Bonds or fetters, and by extension the place where people are bound—prison. Judges uses it for the ropes that bound Samson, which the Spirit enabled him to snap. Ecclesiastes employs it metaphorically for the 'bonds' of the seductive woman's hands that ensnare the foolish. Jeremiah uses 'house of bonds' as a designation for prison. The term captures both the physical restraint and the institution of confinement, linking material and metaphorical captivity.

Senses
1. sense 1 Judges 15:14 describes the ropes on Samson's arms becoming 'like flax that has caught fire, and his bonds melted off his hands' when the Spirit came upon him. Ecclesiastes 7:26 warns that the adulteress woman's hands are 'bonds' that capture the sinner. Jeremiah 37:15 calls the place where Jeremiah was imprisoned 'the house of bonds' (the prison). The Hebrew links physical binding (rope, chains) and institutional confinement (prison), both representing loss of freedom and vulnerability to those who hold power.
