A siege or state of besiegement; also a fortress or fortified stronghold
Matsor captures both sides of ancient siege warfare: the offensive act of besieging a city and the defensive fortification that withstands attack. In Deuteronomy and Jeremiah, it describes the harrowing conditions of prolonged siege — hunger, stress, and desperation (Deut 28:53, 55, 57). Yet the same word can denote a fortress or stronghold, as in the Chronicler's accounts of fortified cities (2 Chr 8:5; 11:5). The dual meaning reflects how closely related the concepts of enclosure and defense were in the ancient military imagination.
1. siege, besiegement — The act, state, or condition of besieging a city, including the military operation and its duration. Spanish 'asedio' and German 'Belagerung' both point squarely to siege. Frequently appears with prepositions: 'in the siege' (Deut 20:19; 2 Kgs 24:10; Jer 52:5) and in the grim pairing 'in siege and in stress' (Deut 28:53, 55, 57; Jer 19:9). Ezekiel's symbolic siege of Jerusalem (Ezek 4:2–8; 5:2) gives the word dramatic prophetic force. 20×

2. fortress, stronghold — A fortified place, stronghold, or defensive structure — sometimes referring to a fortified city or even to Egypt as a land of fortifications. Spanish shifts to 'fortaleza,' French to 'de rocher' (of rock), revealing the semantic pivot from siege to stronghold. The Chronicler uses it for Solomon's and Rehoboam's fortified cities (2 Chr 8:5; 11:5), while the Psalms and prophets invoke it for confident defense (Ps 60:9; Hab 2:1; Mic 7:12). 6×
