Projecting pillar, pilaster, or jamb flanking a gateway or door entrance, especially in temple architecture.
An architectural term for the vertical projections or pilasters that frame an entrance. Nearly all of its occurrences cluster in Ezekiel's detailed temple vision (chapters 40-41), where pairs of these structural members define the gateways at every threshold. The single occurrence in Solomon's temple (1 Kgs 6:31) applies the same concept to a doorpost or lintel frame. Spanish 'pilares' and English 'jambs' capture the structural function, while French curiously renders 'bélier' (ram), likely confusing this word with the homograph meaning 'ram.'
1. pillar or jamb of gateway — A projecting pillar or jamb built into the wall on each side of a gate entrance, forming the structural frame of the gateway. Overwhelmingly attested in Ezekiel 40-41, where these pilasters are measured, paired, and described as integral to every gate chamber. The Hebrew suffixed forms (eilav, 'its jambs') appear repeatedly as Ezekiel catalogs dimensions. Spanish 'sus pilares' and English 'its jambs' consistently mark these as paired architectural features (Ezek 40:9-10, 16, 21, 24). 32×

2. doorpost or lintel — A doorpost or lintel framing the entrance of a door rather than a monumental gate, attested only at 1 Kings 6:31 in the description of Solomon's temple. English 'the posts' and Spanish 'el dintel' (lintel) distinguish this narrower domestic-scale usage from the grand gateway pilasters of Ezekiel. Some scholars emend the text to read eilam (porch), but the Masoretic text preserves the distinction. 1×
