Abaddon; the place of destruction or ruin in Sheol, the realm of the dead personified as a cosmic power.
Abaddon (from the root ʾ-b-d, 'to perish') names the place of utter destruction within the underworld. In the Wisdom literature it appears as a poetic synonym for Sheol and the grave, paired with death itself (Job 28:22) and with the netherworld (Job 26:6; Prov 15:11). The word suggests not merely death but annihilation — a place of no return. In Revelation 9:11, the Greek form Abaddōn becomes a personal name for the angel of the abyss, showing how this Hebrew concept traveled into apocalyptic imagery. French perdition preserves the destructive force of the root.
Senses
1. Abaddon / place of destruction — Abaddon — the place or personification of destruction in the realm of the dead. Used in Hebrew poetry as a synonym for Sheol, the grave, and death (Job 26:6, parallel to Sheol; Job 28:22, parallel to Death; Prov 15:11; Ps 88:11). In Job 31:12 it denotes consuming ruin as a destructive force. The name derives from ʾabad ('to perish'), and French perdition and Spanish Abadón both preserve the sense of irreversible destruction. By Revelation 9:11, the word has become the personal name of the angel of the abyss. 7×
