1. natural, unspiritual, soulish — The adjective psychikos, derived from psyche ('soul/life'), describes that which pertains to the natural, animate life as opposed to the spiritual (pneumatikos). In the NT it carries a consistently pejorative or at least diminishing connotation when contrasted with the spiritual realm. Paul uses it in 1 Corinthians 2:14 for the 'natural person' who cannot receive the things of the Spirit, and extensively in 1 Corinthians 15:44-46 contrasting the 'natural body' (soma psychikon) with the 'spiritual body' (soma pneumatikon). James 3:15 describes false wisdom as 'earthly, unspiritual (psychike), demonic,' and Jude 19 labels divisive persons as 'soulish/worldly (psychikoi), devoid of the Spirit.' All multilingual glosses converge on the natural/soulish domain: Arabic 'tabii / nafsani,' Hebrew 'nafshi / nafshit / nafshiyim,' Korean 'yukshin-jeok / yuk-jeok,' Hindi 'pranik / praakritik / sharirik,' Spanish 'natural / sensuales,' German 'naturlich.' The different English renderings ('natural,' 'unspiritual,' 'soulish') reflect translator emphasis rather than distinct senses. 6×
