Pseudomartureo is a compound of pseudos ('falsehood') and martureo ('to testify'), and it appears in the New Testament exclusively in connection with the ninth commandment and its violation. Jesus cites 'you shall not bear false witness' as part of the Decalogue summary in his encounters with the rich young ruler (Matt 19:18; Mark 10:19; Luke 18:20). Mark then shows the commandment being broken in real time as witnesses at Jesus' trial 'were bearing false witness against him' (Mark 14:56-57). The Spanish 'dar falso testimonio' and German 'falsches Zeugnis geben' both translate the compound literally, preserving its legal-covenantal gravity.
