ψευδομαρτυρέω es un compuesto de ψεῦδος ('falsedad') y μαρτυρέω ('testificar'), y aparece en el Nuevo Testamento exclusivamente en relación con el noveno mandamiento y su transgresión. Jesús cita 'no darás falso testimonio' como parte del resumen del Decálogo en sus encuentros con el joven rico (Mt 19:18; Mr 10:19; Lc 18:20). Marcos muestra luego el mandamiento siendo quebrantado en tiempo real cuando los testigos en el juicio de Jesús 'daban falso testimonio contra él' (Mr 14:56-57). La expresión española 'dar falso testimonio' traduce el compuesto de manera literal, conservando su gravedad jurídica y covenantal.
