χρημᾰτ-ίζω G5537
To warn or instruct by divine revelation; also, to be publicly called or designated by a name or title.
A remarkably versatile verb whose two New Testament senses seem worlds apart—yet both originate in official, authoritative communication. In its primary biblical usage, God 'divinely warns' or 'reveals' something to a person: the Magi are warned in a dream not to return to Herod (Matt 2:12), and Moses is instructed when building the tabernacle (Heb 8:5). French 'divinement averti' beautifully captures the supernatural origin of the communication. The second sense, 'to be called' or 'to bear a name,' appears when the disciples are first 'called' Christians at Antioch (Acts 11:26) and when a remarried woman 'will be called' an adulteress (Rom 7:3). The common thread is public, official designation—whether from heaven or from society.
Senses
1. to warn or instruct divinely — To receive or deliver a divine communication, oracle, or warning from God. Used of the Magi warned in a dream (Matt 2:12), Joseph instructed to avoid Judea (Matt 2:22), Simeon assured he would see the Messiah (Luke 2:26), Cornelius directed to send for Peter (Acts 10:22), Noah warned about the coming flood (Heb 11:7), and Moses instructed about the tabernacle pattern (Heb 8:5). French 'averti divinement' and Spanish 'advertido divinamente' preserve the supernatural source that distinguishes this from ordinary instruction. 7×

2. to be called, bear a name — To be publicly called, designated, or known by a name or title. In Acts 11:26 the disciples were first 'called' (chrēmatisai) Christians at Antioch—an official, public designation. In Rom 7:3 a woman will 'be called' (chrēmatisei) an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband lives. Spanish 'ser llamado' and French 'être appelé' capture the public-designation nuance. The underlying idea of authoritative pronouncement links this to the divine-warning sense: in both cases, a binding label or instruction is formally issued. 2×
