χᾰλῑνᾰγωγ-έω G5468
to bridle, control with a bit, restrain, guide firmly
χαλιναγωγέω (from χαλινός 'bridle' + ἀγωγή 'leading') means to control or guide with a bridle, as one would control a horse. James uses it metaphorically twice in his letter, both times referring to controlling the tongue. In James 1:26, he warns that if anyone 'does not bridle his tongue (χαλιναγωγῶν γλῶσσαν)' while thinking himself religious, his religion is worthless. In James 3:2, he observes that 'if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle (χαλιναγωγῆσαι) his whole body'—control of speech demonstrates comprehensive self-control.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Both uses appear in James' extended treatment of the tongue's power. The imagery is vivid: as a bit controls a powerful horse, so must believers control their speech. The German zuegeln ('to rein in') and Spanish refrenar ('to restrain') preserve the equestrian metaphor. James 1:26 makes bridling the tongue a test of true religion; James 3:2 makes it evidence of spiritual maturity. The tongue, like a horse, requires firm, constant direction. 2×
