This adjective describes something that inspires fear—either terror (something frightening) or awe (something worthy of reverence). The root phobos (fear) can mean either dread or respect. All three New Testament uses appear in Hebrews, describing fearful realities in relation to God: the expectation of judgment, falling into God's hands, and Moses' reaction to Sinai's theophany.
