τῑμάω G5091
To honor, esteem, or show respect to a person; to set a monetary price or value on something
Timaō spans from deep personal reverence to cold commercial valuation. In most of its New Testament occurrences, it commands the honor owed to God and to parents—'Honor your father and mother' (Matt 15:4; 19:19) and 'that all may honor the Son' (John 5:23). The Spanish 'honra/honrad' and German 'ehren' underscore this relational dignity. Yet in Matthew 27:9, the same verb takes a chilling turn: the 'priced one' (ton tetimēmenon) is the Messiah, valued at thirty pieces of silver. The Spanish 'valoraron' ('they appraised') brings out this commercial sense. The juxtaposition is theologically jarring—the one who deserves infinite honor is given a slave's price.
Senses
1. honor, show respect — To honor, esteem, or show reverence to a person, especially God or parents. Jesus cites the Decalogue command 'Honor your father and mother' (Matt 15:4; Mark 7:10) and condemns those who 'honor me with their lips' while their hearts are far away (Matt 15:8; Mark 7:6). The French 'honorer' and German 'ehren' both carry this sense of recognizing someone's inherent worth and dignity. Covers 19 of 21 occurrences. 19×

2. set a price, value — To set a price or assign monetary value to someone or something. Appears only in Matthew 27:9, where the prophet's words are fulfilled regarding the 'price of the one on whom a price had been set' (tēn timēn tou tetimēmenou). The Spanish 'valoraron' ('they appraised') highlights the commercial transaction—Israel's leaders reducing the Messiah's worth to thirty silver coins. A rare but theologically loaded usage. 2×
