All four NT occurrences appear in the Pastoral Epistles, where it is a key qualification for church leaders and mature believers. An overseer must be sophron (1 Tim 3:2; Titus 1:8); older men are urged toward it (Titus 2:2); young women are taught it (Titus 2:5). English 'self-controlled' and Spanish 'prudente' each highlight different facets — the English stresses mastery of appetite, while the Spanish foregrounds wise judgment. German 'besonnen' ('level-headed') captures the calm deliberation at the word's core.
