To trouble, bother, harass; to weary or distress someone by imposing a burden
Originally meaning to flay or tear (related to skulon, 'spoils stripped from the slain'), this verb softened in Koine Greek to mean troubling or bothering someone. Its NT occurrences divide into two vivid patterns. In Matthew 9:36, Jesus sees the crowds 'harassed and helpless,' describing their spiritual exhaustion under poor leadership. In Mark 5:35 and Luke 8:49, messengers tell a distraught father not to 'trouble' Jesus further — the teacher need not be bothered since the child has died. Luke 7:6 has Jesus told not to 'trouble himself' by coming to the centurion's house. Each use carries the poignancy of someone bearing more than they should.
