To be silent, to stop speaking or making sound; used of persons hushed and of a storm stilled
A verb meaning to fall silent or cease from speech and noise. It is used of persons commanded to be quiet — the crowd rebukes the blind men to be silent but they cry out louder (Matt 20:31; Mark 10:48; Luke 18:39), and Jesus remains silent before the high priest's questioning (Matt 26:63). Most dramatically, Jesus commands the storm to be silent (Mark 4:39), and the wind obeys, extending the word beyond human speech to nature itself. In Acts 18:9, the Lord tells Paul not to be silent but to keep speaking. Spanish 'callar' and French 'se taire' capture both the volitional and compelled dimensions of this silence.
Senses
1. be silent, be quiet — To be or become silent, to cease speaking or making sound. Applied to persons told to be quiet (Matt 20:31; Mark 10:48; Luke 18:39), to Jesus' deliberate silence before accusers (Matt 26:63), and to nature when Jesus commands the storm to be still (Mark 4:39). Also used of refraining from speech, as when Paul is told not to be silent (Acts 18:9). Spanish 'callar,' French 'se taire,' and German 'schweigen' all converge on the cessation of sound, whether voluntary, imposed, or miraculous. 10×
