1. advance, progress forward — To make progress or advance, used metaphorically in the New Testament for moral, spiritual, or temporal advancement. In Paul's letters it describes his former progress in Judaism (Gal 1:14), the advance of ungodliness (2 Tim 2:16, 3:9, 3:13), and in Luke 2:52 Jesus's growth in wisdom. The underlying image is of cutting a path forward, but all NT uses are figurative. Also used of the night being 'far spent' or advanced (Rom 13:12), applying the metaphor of forward movement to the passage of time. 6×
