N-NNS  |  1× in 1 sense
citizenship, commonwealth; a community of citizens or the rights/duties thereof
Originally denoting the concrete reality of a government or the collective body of citizens, this term came to mean citizenship itself or the commonwealth to which one belongs. In Philippians 3:20, Paul declares that believers' citizenship exists in heaven, not in earthly political structures. This was revolutionary in the Roman world where citizenship determined identity, rights, and loyalty. Paul reorients believers' primary allegiance to a heavenly polis.

Senses
1. sense 1 The heavenly citizenship that believers possess according to Philippians 3:20. While living as residents on earth, Christians belong to a different commonwealth altogether. This would resonate powerfully with Roman citizens who valued their citizenship, and even more with non-citizens who lacked such status. Paul's point: our true citizenship, rights, and allegiance belong to heaven's realm.
