Derived from the verb meaning 'to count' or 'to recount,' the sofer is someone who handles written records -- whether as a royal secretary managing state correspondence or as a member of a learned scribal guild. In the monarchic period, the scribe is a powerful court official: Shaphan the scribe reads the newly found Torah scroll to King Josiah (2 Kgs 22:8-10), and Baruch serves as Jeremiah's personal scribe (Jer 36:26, 32).
