V-AIM-3S  |  3× in 1 sense
to preserve, to save, to acquire for oneself; to obtain possession or keep safe something valuable
This verb means to keep safe, preserve, or acquire for oneself. Jesus teaches that whoever seeks to 'preserve' his life will lose it (Luke 17:33). Paul charges the Ephesian elders to shepherd the church which God 'obtained' with his own blood (Acts 20:28). Paul tells Timothy that those who serve well as deacons 'acquire' for themselves a good standing (1 Tim 3:13). The word encompasses both protective preservation and active acquisition, often with the middle voice emphasizing personal benefit or responsibility.

Senses
1. sense 1 Cross-linguistic evidence shows both preservation and acquisition: English 'acquire/he-obtained/to-preserve', Spanish 'adquieren/adquirió/conservar', French 'acquérir', German 'erwerben/περιεποιήσατο/περιποιήσασθαι'. The lexicon defines it as 'keep safe, preserve' and 'procure, secure, achieve, lay up' with middle voice meaning 'keep or save for oneself'. Luke 17:33 speaks of preserving/saving one's life. Acts 20:28 describes God obtaining/acquiring the church. 1 Tim 3:13 mentions acquiring good standing. Both protective preservation and active acquisition are present.
