παραδέχομαι G3858
To receive from another, accept, or welcome; used of receiving persons, teachings, or testimony with openness.
In the New Testament, paradechomai describes an act of receptive acceptance — welcoming a person, embracing a teaching, or admitting testimony. When the seed falls on good soil in Mark 4:20, these are the ones who 'receive' the word. In Acts 15:4, the church at Jerusalem 'received' Paul and Barnabas warmly. The range stretches from the cordial reception of missionaries to the judicial acceptance of accusations (1 Tim 5:19), always carrying a note of deliberate, willing openness rather than mere passive intake.
Senses
1. to receive, accept, welcome — To receive, accept, or welcome something or someone offered or presented — embracing with willing openness. The multilingual evidence is remarkably unified: Spanish 'recibir,' French 'recevoir,' German 'annehmen' all converge on active, intentional reception. Used of receiving the gospel message (Mark 4:20), welcoming apostles (Acts 15:4), accepting cultural practices (Acts 16:21), receiving testimony (Acts 22:18), and admitting formal accusations (1 Tim 5:19). The word carries an interpersonal warmth absent from simpler verbs of taking. 6×
