παιδίσκ-η G3814
Servant girl, slave woman; a young female domestic servant or bondmaid in a household.
A diminutive feminine noun meaning 'young female servant' or 'slave girl,' derived from pais ('child, servant'). In the NT it appears most memorably in the Passion narratives: it is a paidiske who confronts Peter in the courtyard, triggering his denials (Matt 26:69; Mark 14:66, 69; Luke 22:56; John 18:17). Paul uses the word in his allegory of Sarah and Hagar (Gal 4:22-31), contrasting the son of the slave woman with the son of the free woman. Acts 12:13 introduces Rhoda, a servant girl who answers Peter's knock after his miraculous escape from prison. The translations consistently distinguish the feminine and servile status: Spanish criada, French servante, German Magd.
Senses
1. servant girl, slave woman — A young female servant, maidservant, or slave woman in a domestic household. The word appears prominently in Peter's denial scenes, where a servant girl identifies him as a follower of Jesus (Matt 26:69; Mark 14:66, 69; Luke 22:56; John 18:17), in Paul's Hagar-Sarah allegory distinguishing the slave woman from the free (Gal 4:22-31), and in the account of Rhoda the servant girl (Acts 12:13). Cross-lingual glosses consistently mark both gender and servile status (Spanish criada, French servante, German Magd), confirming a single unified sense. 13×
