N-NMP  |  5× in 1 sense
Reproach, disgrace, reviling; shame or insult endured for one's faith or identity.
A noun denoting reproach, disgrace, or reviling — the experience of being publicly shamed or insulted. In the NT, it consistently appears in contexts of suffering for faith. Romans 15:3 quotes Psalm 69:9, applying the reproaches against God to Christ himself. Hebrews develops this theme most richly: believers endured reproaches and afflictions publicly (10:33), Moses chose 'the reproach of Christ' over Egypt's treasures (11:26), and the community is called to go outside the camp bearing his reproach (13:13). The German 'Schmach' powerfully conveys the weight of public disgrace.

Senses
1. sense 1 Reproach or disgrace — public shaming, insult, or reviling endured typically on account of faithfulness to God. In Rom 15:3, Christ bears the reproaches meant for God (quoting Ps 69:9). The Hebrews passages develop a theology of reproach: it is something to be endured publicly (10:33), chosen deliberately like Moses did (11:26), and embraced as a mark of identification with Jesus 'outside the camp' (13:13). First Timothy 3:7 warns that an overseer must have a good reputation to avoid falling into the devil's 'reproach.' The German 'Schmach' and French 'insulte' capture the public, social dimension of this shaming.
