N-AMP  |  2× in 1 sense
household members, those belonging to one's domestic circle
The members of a household, particularly servants or dependents under the master's authority. Jesus uses this term twice in Matthew 10 to warn disciples about persecution: if they called the master Beelzebul, how much more will they malign 'his household members' (10:25), and 'a person's enemies will be the members of his own household' (10:36). The word suggests not just physical proximity but authority relationships—those under the householder's governance, whether family or servants.

Senses
1. sense 1 Household members or domestic servants, those belonging to a person's oikos. The term implies subordinate status within the household hierarchy. Jesus' usage in Matthew 10 is sobering: disciples will face opposition from both outsiders (who slandered Jesus) and insiders (family members). The household that should be a place of safety becomes a site of conflict when allegiance to Christ divides families. Cross-linguistic glosses (Spanish 'de la casa,' French 'gens de maison') preserve the household connection.
