νουθετ-έω G3560
To admonish, warn, or instruct with corrective intent; literally, to place something in the mind so as to redirect behavior.
Noutheteo combines nous (mind) and tithemi (to place) — it means literally to put something into someone's mind. Unlike harsh rebuke, it blends warning with teaching, aiming at correction rather than condemnation. Paul uses it of his own pastoral practice: warning the Ephesian elders night and day for three years (Acts 20:31), admonishing the Corinthians as beloved children (1 Cor 4:14), and describing the mutual responsibility of believers to admonish one another (Col 3:16, Rom 15:14). The Spanish 'amonestar' preserves the corrective-but-caring tone beautifully.
Senses
1. admonish, warn — To counsel or warn someone with the goal of correcting their understanding or behavior, combining exhortation with gentle rebuke. The etymology (nous + tithemi, 'to place in the mind') reveals the word's distinctive angle: this is not mere scolding but intentional instruction aimed at mental reorientation. Paul employs it for sustained pastoral care (Acts 20:31, three years of nightly admonition) and for the mutual responsibility of mature believers (Rom 15:14, Col 3:16). Spanish 'amonestar' and German 'ermahnen' both capture the blend of authority and concern. 8×
