V-AIM-3S  |  9× in 1 sense
To send for someone, summon; to dispatch a messenger requesting another's presence.
A compound verb (meta + pempo) meaning to send after someone, that is, to summon them through an intermediary. In the NT it appears exclusively in Acts, where it describes the Roman and early Christian practice of formally requesting someone's presence. Cornelius sends for Peter (Acts 10:5, 22), and Peter later recounts being summoned (Acts 11:13). The word captures the social dynamic of indirect communication through messengers -- Spanish 'hacer venir' (to cause to come) nicely reflects this causative force.

Senses
1. send for, summon To dispatch a messenger to fetch or summon a person, requesting their presence through an intermediary. Confined entirely to Acts in the NT, this verb describes the formal process of sending for someone rather than going oneself. Cornelius the centurion sends for Peter three times in the narrative (Acts 10:5, 22, 29), and the word recurs in Peter's retelling (Acts 11:13) and in similar summons scenes (Acts 24:24, 26; 25:3). The Spanish 'hacer venir' and German 'holen lassen' both capture the causative, delegated nature of the action -- one does not go but sends another to bring the desired person.
