V-FIM-1S  |  4× in 1 sense
To summon, send for, or call someone to come from another place.
A compound of meta (implying change of place) and kaleo (to call), this verb means to summon someone, to send for a person to come from where they are. All four New Testament occurrences appear in Acts, reflecting its administrative and interpersonal register. Joseph sends for his father Jacob (Acts 7:14), Cornelius is told to summon Peter (Acts 10:32), Paul sends for the Ephesian elders (Acts 20:17), and Felix summons Paul for conversation (Acts 24:25). The Spanish 'hizo llamar' (caused to be called) nicely captures the causative nuance of sending for someone at a distance.

Senses
1. sense 1 To summon or send for someone, calling them to come from another location. The meta- prefix conveys movement toward the caller, distinguishing this from a simple calling out. Spanish 'hizo llamar' (had someone called) and French 'appeler' (to call) reflect the summoning action. All four NT uses occur in Acts: Joseph summons Jacob to Egypt (7:14), Cornelius is instructed to send for Peter (10:32), Paul calls the Ephesian elders to Miletus (20:17), and Felix sends for Paul repeatedly (24:25).
