μεταδίδωμι G3330
To share with, give a portion of what one has, or impart generously to another.
Goes beyond simple giving to emphasize sharing from what one already possesses. John the Baptist urged those with two tunics to 'share' with the one who has none (Luke 3:11). Paul longed to 'impart' a spiritual gift to the Romans (Rom 1:11) and describes sharing not only the gospel but 'our own selves' with the Thessalonians (1 Thess 2:8). The Spanish 'compartir' and German 'mitteilen' beautifully capture this participatory generosity: not giving away everything, but letting others into what you have.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To give a share of what one possesses, to impart or distribute generously. The emphasis falls on participatory giving rather than total transfer. John the Baptist commands sharing clothing with those in need (Luke 3:11); Paul desires to impart a spiritual gift (Rom 1:11); the generous person is called to share with zeal (Rom 12:8); the thief must now labor so as to have something to share (Eph 4:28). The Spanish 'compartir' and French 'donner' together highlight the relational warmth of this giving. 5×
