κῡρι-ότης G2963
Lordship, dominion, sovereign authority; both the abstract concept of ruling power and a class of angelic beings.
Derived from κύριος ('lord'), this noun carries both an abstract and a concrete sense in the NT. Abstractly, it denotes sovereign authority or ruling power—the kind of dominion that belongs to God or is exercised by rulers. Concretely, it appears in Pauline angel-hierarchies as a rank of celestial beings: 'thrones, lordships, rulers, authorities' (Col 1:16). In 2 Pet 2:10 and Jude 8, rejecting κυριότης means despising divinely constituted authority. The multilingual evidence—Spanish señorío, French autorité, German Herrschaft—all converge on the concept of sovereign ruling power.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Lordship, dominion, ruling authority; also a class of angelic powers. Encompasses both the abstract quality of sovereign rule and its personified bearers in the celestial hierarchy. In Eph 1:21 Christ is exalted above every κυριότης, and in Col 1:16 the κυριότητες are listed among created heavenly orders—thrones, dominions, principalities, authorities. In 2 Pet 2:10 and Jude 8, false teachers 'despise κυριότητα,' which may refer to the Lord's authority, angelic dignities, or both. Spanish señorío ('lordship, domain') and German Herrschaft ('rule, dominion') capture the governing-power core, while the plural usage in Colossians and Ephesians points to a concrete angelic rank. 4×
