To hide or conceal; in passive/middle, to be hidden, lie concealed, or hide oneself — covering both deliberate concealment and states of hiddenness
Krypto is the basic Greek verb for hiding, and the New Testament exploits both its active and passive voices to rich theological effect. Actively, it describes concealing treasure in a field (Matt 13:44), burying a talent (Matt 25:18, 25), or a woman hiding leaven in flour (Luke 13:21). In its passive and middle forms, it speaks of truths hidden from human perception — things 'hidden since the foundation of the world' (Matt 13:35), realities concealed from the wise (Matt 11:25, Luke 10:21), and the meaning of Jesus' words hidden from the disciples (Luke 18:34). The interplay between human acts of concealment and divine acts of revelation runs throughout.

Senses
1. be hidden, hide oneself To be hidden, to lie concealed, or to hide oneself — passive, stative, and middle-reflexive uses where the subject is the one in a state of hiddenness rather than the agent doing the hiding. A city on a hill 'cannot be hidden' (Matt 5:14), things 'hidden from the foundation of the world' are revealed in parables (Matt 13:35), treasure lies 'hidden' in a field (Matt 13:44 passive participle), and the meaning of Jesus' words 'was hidden' from the disciples (Luke 18:34, 19:42). Spanish 'escondida/esconderse' and German 'verborgen' reflect this stative-passive sense. 12×

2. hide, conceal something To hide or conceal something actively and deliberately — transitive uses where the subject intentionally conceals an object, person, or truth from others. Jesus thanks the Father for having 'hidden' these things from the wise (Matt 11:25, Luke 10:21), a man hides treasure he found (Matt 13:44 active), the fearful servant 'hid' his master's talent in the ground (Matt 25:18, 25), and a woman 'hid' leaven in three measures of flour (Luke 13:21). Spanish 'escondieron/escondiste' and French 'cacher' capture the deliberate agency in these acts of concealment.
