κλαυθμ-ός G2805
Weeping, wailing; loud, audible crying that expresses grief, anguish, or lamentation.
Denotes weeping or wailing — loud, audible crying driven by grief, anguish, or despair. In the Gospels, klauthmos appears most characteristically in Jesus' repeated phrase about 'outer darkness' where there will be 'weeping and gnashing of teeth' (Matt 8:12; 13:42, 50; 22:13; 24:51; 25:30; Luke 13:28). This formulaic pairing makes klauthmos a word heavy with eschatological dread. It also appears in Matthew 2:18 quoting Jeremiah's oracle of Rachel weeping for her children — a passage where Spanish 'llanto' and German 'Weinen' both convey deep, inconsolable mourning.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Weeping, wailing, or loud lamentation expressing intense grief or anguish. Klauthmos goes beyond quiet tears to denote audible, demonstrative crying. Its most distinctive NT use is in Jesus' recurring formula 'there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth' (Matt 8:12; 13:42, 50; 22:13; 24:51; 25:30; Luke 13:28), where it evokes the anguished outcry of those excluded from the kingdom. In Matthew 2:18, it echoes Jeremiah 31:15 — Rachel's inconsolable weeping over her slaughtered children. French 'pleur' and German 'Weinen' both capture the visceral, audible quality of this grief. 9×
