Proclamation, preaching — the content or act of heralding a message publicly, especially the apostolic gospel announcement.
Kerygma is one of the great technical terms of early Christianity, denoting the public proclamation of the gospel message. Derived from kerysso ('to herald'), it can refer either to the act of preaching or to the content of what is preached — and often both at once. Paul's famous declaration that 'it pleased God through the foolishness of the kerygma to save those who believe' (1 Cor 1:21) plays on this dual meaning: the message sounds foolish, and the method of open proclamation seems weak, yet God chose precisely this combination. Jesus invokes 'the preaching of Jonah' (Matt 12:41; Luke 11:32) as a model of proclamation that produced repentance. The word carries the weight of official, authoritative announcement — not private conversation but public heralding.
