κῆνσος G2778
Poll-tax; a census-based tax levied per head, borrowed from Latin census into Koine Greek.
A loanword from Latin census, this term refers to a per-capita tax imposed by Rome on subject peoples. In the Gospels it becomes the flashpoint of a famous trap question: 'Is it lawful to pay kēnsos to Caesar?' (Matt 22:17; Mark 12:14). The word carries political freight—paying it implied acknowledging Roman sovereignty, which is why the question was so incendiary. Spanish tributo and French impôt both capture the coercive, state-imposed nature of this levy.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A poll-tax or tribute exacted by Roman authority from conquered populations, collected per individual rather than on property or goods. All four NT occurrences cluster around the controversy over paying taxes to Caesar (Matt 17:25; 22:17, 19; Mark 12:14). The multilingual glosses—Spanish tributo/impuesto, German Steuer, French impôt—all point to a compulsory governmental levy, underscoring the political tension the word carries in its Gospel contexts. 4×
