κελεύω G2753
to command, order — to direct someone with authority, issuing a binding instruction
Keleuo means to command or order with recognized authority, and its 26 NT occurrences consistently involve a superior directing a subordinate: a master commanding servants, a king issuing decrees, a military officer dispatching soldiers, or a judge ordering punishment. Jesus commands the crowd to sit before feeding the multitude (Matt 14:19; 15:35), and bids Peter come to him on the water (Matt 14:28). Pilate commands the body of Jesus to be given to Joseph (Matt 27:58). In Acts, the verb becomes almost formulaic for official judicial and military orders: the tribune orders Paul brought into the barracks (Acts 21:33-34; 22:24), the Sanhedrin commands the apostles to withdraw (Acts 5:34), and Festus orders Paul kept in custody (Acts 25:6, 21, 23). Unlike the weightier entellomai or the prophetic divine command, keleuo occupies the everyday register of human institutional authority. Spanish 'ordenar/mandar' and French 'commander/ordonner' both reflect this administrative tone.
Senses
1. to command, order — To give an authoritative command or order, spoken by persons in positions of recognized power — kings, governors, military officers, and masters. Jesus commands crowds and elements (Matt 14:19, 28; 15:35), Pilate orders the release of Jesus' body (Matt 27:58), and in Acts the verb becomes near-formulaic for judicial proceedings: the tribune ordering Paul's detention (Acts 21:33-34; 22:24), Festus directing his custody (Acts 25:6, 21). Spanish 'ordenar' and German 'befehlen' both capture the institutional authority register. 26×
