καύχ-ημα G2745
Boast, ground of boasting — the object, basis, or matter in which one takes pride; what one boasts about
The noun καύχημα (kauchēma) denotes the object or ground of boasting — the concrete thing one points to with pride, distinct from καύχησις which is the act of boasting. Abraham might have a ground of boasting before men, but not before God (Rom 4:2). Paul's own 'boast' is preaching the gospel free of charge (1 Cor 9:15-16), while the Corinthians' boasting is ill-founded when tolerating sin (1 Cor 5:6). Believers will be Paul's boast at Christ's return (2 Cor 1:14; Phil 1:26; 2:16). Gal 6:4 urges testing one's own work so that one's boast stands on its own merit. Spanish 'motivo de jactancia' and German 'Ruhm' capture the objective character.
Senses
1. boast, ground of boasting — The object, basis, or matter of boasting — the concrete thing in which one takes pride or to which one points as grounds for confidence. Abraham might have a boast before men but not before God (Rom 4:2). Paul's boast is preaching the gospel without charge (1 Cor 9:15-16), and his churches are his boast at Christ's return (2 Cor 1:14; Phil 1:26; 2:16). Believers should test their own work so that their boast is in themselves and not in comparison (Gal 6:4). The cross of Christ, not human achievement, becomes the sole ground of glorying (2 Cor 5:12; Heb 3:6). Negatively, tolerating sin makes a community's boast illegitimate (1 Cor 5:6). Spanish 'motivo de jactancia' and Arabic 'فَخْر' both convey the substantive, objective ground of pride. 11×
