V-ANP  |  3× in 1 sense
to consider worthy, deem worthy, count worthy; to judge someone deserving of something
This verb means to consider someone worthy, deem them deserving, or count them as meriting something. Luke 20:35 describes 'those who are considered worthy to attain that age and the resurrection from the dead.' Acts 5:41 says the apostles rejoiced 'that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the Name.' Second Thessalonians 1:5 cites the Thessalonians' endurance as evidence 'that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God.' Classical usage includes deeming worthy, commanding, deigning, and sometimes degrading by comparison. The New Testament use consistently involves divine judgment of worthiness for eschatological blessing or present suffering for Christ's sake.

Senses
1. sense 1 The sense is being judged or counted worthy, particularly in God's reckoning. Luke 20:35 speaks of resurrection-worthiness—those God deems fit for the age to come. Acts 5:41 presents suffering for Jesus as an honor—the apostles were counted worthy of this privilege, rejoicing in dishonor. Second Thessalonians 1:5 connects perseverance under persecution to worthiness for God's kingdom—their endurance demonstrates they're being counted worthy. The Spanish glosses use 'considerar digno' (consider worthy), while German has 'würdig erachten' (deem worthy). This is divine evaluation and assignment—God counts certain people worthy, whether for resurrection life or for the privilege of suffering for Christ's name, both paradoxical honors from the world's perspective.
