V-AIA-1S  |  2× in 1 sense
burden, weigh down, impose a load or obligation on someone
This verb means to burden or impose a weight upon someone. Mark 14:40 describes the disciples in Gethsemane: 'their eyes were very heavy (κατεβαρημένοι),' weighed down with sleep, unable to stay awake with Jesus. Paul uses it metaphorically in 2 Corinthians 12:16, defending himself against accusations: 'I did not burden (κατεβάρησα) you,' meaning he did not impose financial demands on the Corinthian church. The term thus describes both physical oppression (eyelids heavy with exhaustion) and relational or economic imposition (burdening others with one's needs).

Senses
1. sense 1 The two uses involve physical weariness (Mark) and financial restraint (2 Corinthians). Classical usage (LSJ) includes weighing down, overloading, being crushed. Spanish 'cargados' (loaded, burdened) and German 'beschweren' (to burden) capture the weight metaphor. Mark's account poignantly shows the disciples unable to bear the weight of wakefulness during Jesus' agony, while Paul's apostolic practice was to avoid burdening churches financially, working with his own hands to maintain independence and model self-sufficiency.
