V-IIM/P-1S  |  7× in 1 sense
To sit down, be seated, remain sitting; physical posture of rest or sustained presence in a place.
Kathezomai means to sit down or remain seated, describing a deliberate bodily posture. It appears in contexts ranging from the boy Jesus sitting among the temple teachers (Luke 2:46) to Jesus sitting wearied at Jacob's well (John 4:6), Mary sitting at home in mourning (John 11:20), and the two angels seated in the empty tomb (John 20:12). Spanish sentado and German sich setzen capture the basic postural meaning. The word overlaps with kathēmai but tends to emphasize the act of taking a seat or settling into position.

Senses
1. sit, be seated To sit down, take a seat, or remain in a seated position—a verb of physical posture indicating either the act of settling or a sustained seated state. In Matt 26:55 Jesus reminds his captors he sat daily teaching in the temple. In Luke 2:46 the twelve-year-old Jesus is found sitting among the teachers. At Jacob's well Jesus sat down, wearied from travel (John 4:6). Martha goes to meet Jesus while Mary 'remained sitting at home' (John 11:20). The two angels sit inside the empty tomb (John 20:12). Spanish me sentaba and French s'asseoir confirm the straightforward postural sense throughout.
