Adj-NMS  |  5× in 1 sense
Acceptable, well-received, pleasing; describing offerings, service, or actions that find favorable reception before God.
A compound adjective meaning 'well-received' or 'readily acceptable,' used exclusively in contexts of divine approval. Paul describes the Gentiles as an offering 'acceptable' to God through the Spirit's sanctifying work (Rom 15:16) and prays that his service in Jerusalem would prove acceptable to the saints (Rom 15:31). The term echoes the OT language of pleasing sacrifice. In 2 Corinthians 6:2, Paul quotes Isaiah to declare 'now is the acceptable time' of salvation. Spanish 'aceptable,' French 'agréable,' and German 'annehmbar' all converge on the idea of favorable reception.

Senses
1. sense 1 Acceptable, well-received, pleasing — especially of that which finds favorable reception before God. The multilingual evidence is remarkably unified: Spanish 'aceptable/bien aceptable,' French 'agréable,' and German 'annehmbar' all point to the same concept of willing acceptance. In Rom 15:16 Gentile believers are an acceptable offering sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Rom 15:31 applies it to Paul's hope that his ministry be well-received. 2 Cor 6:2 uses it in the prophetic formula 'acceptable time' of salvation. 2 Cor 8:12 teaches that a gift is acceptable according to what one has. 1 Pet 2:5 describes spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Christ.
