εὐοδ-όω G2137
to prosper, succeed, have a good journey; to be granted success by God
Originally meaning 'to help someone on their way,' this verb broadened in biblical usage to encompass any kind of prospering or success, often understood as divinely granted. Paul's prayer for a safe journey to Rome (Rom 1:10) preserves the travel sense, while his instruction to set aside funds 'as one prospers' (1 Cor 16:2) shifts to financial well-being. In 3 John 1:2 it appears twice, covering both material prosperity and spiritual health. The Spanish 'prosperar' and French 'prospérer' both capture the breadth.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To prosper, succeed, or be granted a favorable outcome—originally of journeys, then broadened to general well-being. Paul uses the travel sense when he prays to reach Rome by God's will (Rom 1:10). In 1 Corinthians 16:2 it describes financial gain—saving 'as one may prosper.' Third John 1:2 employs it twice: once for physical health and once for the soul's flourishing, showing the word's full semantic stretch. Spanish 'prosperar' and French 'prospérer' confirm the unified prosperity sense. 4×
