Benefactors, patrons; those who confer benefits or perform good deeds for others
In the Greco-Roman world, 'benefactor' was both a description and an official title conferred on rulers and wealthy individuals who funded public works, distributed grain, or otherwise served their communities. Jesus references this system in Luke 22:25, noting that Gentile rulers who exercise authority over others are called benefactors—often ironically, since their 'generosity' served to cement power and demand gratitude.

Senses
1. sense 1 Jesus' use of this term (Luke 22:25) critiques the patronage system where political power masqueraded as benevolence. While Gentile rulers loved the title 'benefactor' (used officially by Hellenistic kings), Jesus' kingdom inverts this: greatness comes through service, not through leveraging gifts to create obligation. The translations ('benefactors,' 'bienhechores,' 'bienfaiteur') preserve both the noble aspiration and the ironic reality Jesus exposed.
