ἐπιχορηγ-έω G2023
To supply, furnish, provide generously; used of God's provision and believers' active cultivation of virtues.
Originally a term from civic life — a choregus was someone who generously funded a chorus — this verb carries overtones of lavish, abundant provision. Paul uses it of God supplying seed to the sower and multiplying the harvest (2 Cor 9:10), and of the Spirit being supplied through faith (Gal 3:5). In Colossians 2:19, Christ the Head supplies nourishment to the whole body. Peter employs it memorably to urge believers to 'supplement' their faith with virtue, knowledge, and love (2 Pet 1:5), with the promise that entrance to the eternal kingdom will be 'richly supplied' to them (2 Pet 1:11).
Senses
1. sense 1 — To supply, furnish, provide abundantly — to give generously or add to what already exists. The word's background in civic patronage (funding a chorus) colors it with overtones of liberal generosity. Spanish 'proveer/suplir' and French 'pourvoir' capture the provision aspect. In 2 Cor 9:10 God is the supplier of seed and bread; in Gal 3:5 the Spirit is supplied through faith's hearing. Col 2:19 uses it of Christ nourishing the body. In 2 Pet 1:5 believers are to add virtues upon their faith in a chain of moral development, and in 2 Pet 1:11 the reward is an abundantly supplied entrance into Christ's kingdom. 5×
