ἐπιτάσσω G2004
To command, order with authority — to impose a directive from a position of power over persons or spirits
The verb ἐπιτάσσω (epitasso), compounded from ἐπί ('upon') and τάσσω ('arrange, order'), means to command or give orders with recognized authority. In the Synoptic Gospels it characterizes Jesus's sovereign authority: the crowds marvel that he 'commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey' (Mark 1:27; Luke 4:36). It describes Herod ordering a soldier to bring John's head (Mark 6:27), Jesus commanding the crowd to recline (Mark 6:39), and the high priest ordering Paul to be struck (Acts 23:2). Paul claims the right to 'command' Philemon but chooses to appeal instead (Phlm 1:8). Arabic يَأْمُرُ, Hebrew מְצַוֶּה, Korean 명령하다, and Spanish 'mandar/ordenar' all reflect authoritative directive speech.
Senses
1. command, order (with authority) — To command or order from a position of superior authority, imposing a directive upon subordinates, spirits, or natural forces. Jesus commands unclean spirits and they obey (Mark 1:27; Luke 4:36; Mark 9:25; Luke 8:31), commands wind and water (Luke 8:25), and directs crowds (Mark 6:39). Human authorities likewise use it: Herod commands the execution of John (Mark 6:27), the high priest orders Paul struck (Acts 23:2), and Paul asserts but declines the right to command Philemon (Phlm 1:8). The word always implies recognized power to enforce compliance. 10×
